For King + Country’s new movie, Unsung Hero, which releases on April 26, tells the compelling true story of the Smallbone family. The movie centers on Joel and Luke’s dad, David, and mom, Helen, and their family of six kids as they moved from Australia to the United States.
The family had almost nothing when they moved to the United States, but their love, determination, and devotion got them through even the hardest times. Rebecca St. James reflected in this video, “I think because Mom and Dad posed it to us as an adventure, it was that, and they didn’t seem scared, so we weren’t scared.”
The video is a testament to the importance of family and working together to make it through the hardships. There are many integral characters in the movie, ones that so many of us will connect with. In the video, Joel shared, “Who is the Unsung Hero? To an 18-year-old girl, it’s Rebecca. To a father who’s trying to figure out how to navigate being a husband and a dad, it’s David. To women in marriage and motherhood, it’s Mum.”
For King + Country also wrote a song by the same title as a tribute to their parents. The lyrics intertwine Joel and Luke’s stories of growing up, getting married, and having children with the lessons their parents taught them and attributes they displayed.
You’re strong like your father even when you are scared
When I was in trouble, you never left me there
And you love like your mother, like there’s nothing to lose
You’re an unsung hero, so I’ll sing this song for you ….For all the times I fell down, you showed me how to stand
For King + Country, “Unsung Hero”
And when we crossed the ocean, you were my safe place to land
Been on a thousand stages, but when it’s all said and done
I hope I make you proud of, of the man that I’ve become
The cast of the movie includes Joel Smallbone (as his father, David), Daisy Betts (as Helen Smallbone), Kirrilee Berger (as Rebecca St. James), Candace Cameron Bure (as Kay Albright), Hillary Scott (as Luanne Meece), and more.
