Receiving an unexpected package can sometimes be part of a fraud scheme known as “brushing.” Scammers use your address and contact information to send items you did not order, often to create fake reviews or attempt to collect payment later. If this happens, follow these steps to protect yourself:
1. Do Not Pay for It
Federal law allows you to keep unsolicited merchandise as a gift. You are not required to pay for it or send it back.
2. Report the Activity
South Dakota Division of Consumer Protection – File a complaint online or call 1-800-300-1986 (in-state) or 605-773-4400.
Retailer or Marketplace – Notify the company (e.g., Amazon) that appears to have sent the package. File a fraud report so they can investigate and remove fraudulent sellers.
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) – Report scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
3. Secure Your Accounts
Change your passwords for online shopping sites and any other important accounts. Use strong, unique passwords for each account.
4. Do Not Engage with the Sender
Do not scan QR codes, click links, or respond to any payment demands. Ignore any attempts at contact from the scammer.
5. Monitor for Identity Theft
Check your bank statements and credit reports for unusual activity. Consider placing a free security freeze on your credit to prevent new accounts from being opened in your name.
6. Report Suspicious Items
If the package contains seeds, plants, or organic material, report it to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Do not plant them, as they could be invasive.
For local assistance or to report suspicious activity, contact your local Police Department.
